Farrell had even been featured on some of the promo art for the movie, but Pattinson will now take on the role of Eric Packer, a multi-millionaire asset manager, and seeming master of the universe, living in New York City.
The character’s limo gets pinned in a colossal New York traffic jam as the world seemingly disintegrates around him. The problem is Packer is facing a major deadline on the biggest economic gamble of his life.
As he tries to negotiate around a presidential motorcade, anti-globalization demonstrations and even a celebrity funeral, the repercussions of his financial bet take on deadly consequences.
Cronenberg wrote and will direct the movie, according to deadline.com, which broke the story.
As much as he’s benefited from his role as vampire Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” series, Pattinson would like to grow beyond the role.
This movie will put him in league with some A-list talent in Cotillard and Giamatti, although neither have been confirmed for the film.
Farrell reportedly dropped out of the picture to make “Total Recall.”
Pattinson is currently filming the latest in the Twilight series, “Breaking Dawn,” with Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.
He just finished filming “Water for Elephants” with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, of “Inglorious Basterds” fame.
“Cosmopolis” is basically “Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps” on steroids. It’s set in a slightly futuristic city where capitalism is a blood sport, complete with assassins.
According to deadline, Pattinson took the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg’s work and DeLillo’s books.
The film, more than any other so far, may broaden Rob’s horizons.
