Britney Spears is on the verge of launching her Femme Fatale tour, reportedly weighing in at a hefty 155 pounds, and it shows in recent music videos. But a new independent clip really brings the contrast into sharp focus.
Although Spears is only 29, she is evoking images of another iconic singer who gained significant weight in the latter years of his career, Elvis Presley.
Presley was rail thin when he launched his career in the 1950s, but by the time of his death in Aug. 1977 at 42, he weighed between 230 and 250 pounds.
In contrast, at his army pre-induction physical just days before his 22nd birthday, the 6-foot-tall Presley weighed 175 pounds.
In the army he became hooked on amphetamines and drug abuse became an increasing part of his life. He died from acute drug intoxication.
In a video titled “Old Britney vs New Britney,” the Web site PopDust.com contrasts clips from Britney’s performances leading up to her breakdown in 2007 and how she looks today.
The clips form her earliest performances, include classics such as “I’m A Slave For U” at the 2001 MTV Awards and her 2003 video for “Me Against The Music.”
She’s also shown in one of her breakthrough videos for “Baby One More Time” in 1999.
They are compared with her recent videos for “Hold It Against Me” and “Till The World Ends” among other performances.
In those clips, she’s described as tentative, wobbly and confused looking; her arms at times flail, and she looks like she’s had one too many cheeseburgers.
She also reportedly is taking medication for a bi-polar disorder that may be causing bloat.
Time certainly takes it’s toll, but Spears is only 29.
Although she has been through the wringer in her personal life, marked by divorce and her breakdown, singers 10 years her senior can dance rings around her, and not onion rings.
Brit’s fans will certainly continue to support her. But the comparison is painful. Check it out below.
