Osama bin Laden Death Turns Late Night Punch Line (watch!) 1David Letterman, Jay Leno and other late night comics had a field day with Osama bin Laden jokes, reducing to a punchline the man who once personified the horror of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Bin Laden was killed by U.S. special forces in a surprise nighttime raid on his luxury compound in Pakistan on Sunday night (May 1), after a ten year search for the Al Qaeda leader.

“You seem like you’re in a good mood,” said Letterman, opening his monologue. “You folks enjoy the Osama Bin Laden season finale?”

Tonight Show host Leno was equally ecstatic. “It looks like President Obama has a new campaign slogan: ‘Yes I Did.'”

“Great news, the world’s most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, is dead. Which means now the official No. 1 threat to America is the KFC Double Down,” said Conan O’Brien on his cable show.

Even B-Team talk show hosts got in on the action.

“It was the first Twitter death rumor ever that turned out to be true,” jested Jimmy Kimmel on ABC.

Late Night host Jimmy Fallon added: “Bin Laden is dead! Just like the Republicans’ chances in 2012.”

Indeed, President Obama who announced bin Laden’s death on national television took a calculated gamble by risking a mission with U.S. special forces.

Bin Laden’s heavily fortified compound was located in a suburb on the outskirts of Pakistan’s capital city and with walking distance to the nation’s premiere military training academy.

Plus, the military’s track record for special operations strikes is not the greatest.

Two of its biggest failures were the incursion in Somalia, captured by the movie “Black Hawk Down,” and the failed U.S. effort to rescue hostages in Iran in the 1970s.

But this time special forces performed with precision, even after a helicopter went down due to mechanical failure.

While it was a good day for Obama, Republicans, including former President George Bush, Sarah Palin and pretender Donald Trump did not fare as well. They also were the butt of jokes.

“‘When he heard about it, former president Bush was furious and said ‘Wait a minute – I could have used seals?'” one comic joked.

The irony wasn’t lost when it turned out that Obama pre-empted regular programming right in the middle of Trump’s show, “Celebrity Apprentice.”

“On the same night Obama was ordering the Navy to kill Bin Laden, his potential opponent in 2012 Donald Trump was busy firing Playmate of the Month Hope Dworaczyk,” said Kimmel.
