Beyonce Unveils Soulful R&B Ballad on American Idol (watch!) 1Beyoncé showed a different side to her power pop sound with a soulful new single. She sang it publicly for the first time on American Idol. The song, “1+1,” off her new album, simply titled “4,” is about vulnerability and enduring love.

The song reflects more of her R&B roots in keeping with the general theme of her new album.

Beyoncé said she is hoping to take her music in a new direction with the album and cites as influence such acts as Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

The Nigerian revolutionary was the subject of a hit Broadway musical co-produced by husband Jay-Z.

Beyoncé also said found inspiration from such groups and artists as Earth, Wind & Fire, DeBarge, Lionel Richie, and Teena Marie, who were the vanguard of old-school R&B in the ’80s and ’90s.

“I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Prince. Add in my hip-hop influences, and you can hear how broad it is,” she said.

“I also gave myself more freedom to really belt out some songs, and bring soul singing back.”

In contrast her previous release from the album, “Run The World (Girls),” is a heady, dance-driven tune set against a post-apocalyptic world in the video.
