Johnny Depp is featured in a new trailer making another run at portraying late gonzo-journalist Hunter S. Thompson. This time, it’s a big-screen adaptation of Thompson’s loosely autobiographical novel “The Rum Diary.”
The film also stars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins.
Depp played Thompson in a 1998 film based on his book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” By all accounts the movie was a stinker.
It grossed $10.6 million in North America during its run, and didn’t even make back its meager $18.5 million budget.
Fortunately, it has since become a cult film through its DVD release special Criterion edition, which may provide a fan base for Depp’s latest effort.
The Rum Diary, which can best be described as semi-fictional, is about Thompson’s drug- and alcohol-fueled times in Puerto Rico. He worked there as a young journalist and wrote the book in 1958. It was published 40 years later.
Depp, plays alcoholic journalist Paul Kemp, who writes for a failing local paper in San Juan while dosing liberally on LSD.
Kemp begins the habit of drinking rum and becomes obsessed with the woman Chenault (Heard).
The picture hits theaters Oct. 28th. Maybe Depp can redeem himself. Check out the trailer below.
