Zooey Deschanel Sings Series National Anthem?!? (watch) 1Zooey Deschanel has a new claim to fame. She’s the latest celebrity to sing the National Anthem on a major televised event– without mangling the lyrics.

Deschanel is best known for acting and her new Fox sit-com “New Girl,” but she also plays in a band.

Thankfully, was smart enough to memorize the words to the “Star Spangled Banner” to avoid making a fool of herself.

She opened Game Four of the World Series last night (Oct. 23) and powerfully sang the song without a hitch.

The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics

Oh, say, can you see,
by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d
at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d,
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night
that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Deschanel’s approach was pretty straight forward.

She sang in a raspy, but clear voice without the vocal flourishes of some rangy singers, such as Christina Aguilera, who sang it at the Super Bowl in February.

Aguilera followed in the footsteps of such singers as Whitney Houston during Super Bowl XXV in 1991, Faith Hill in 2000, Diana Ross in 1982, Natalie Cole, Cher, Mariah Carey, the Dixie Chicks and Beyonce.

But about 50 seconds into the song she flubbed the lyrics.

She sang “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

The lyrics as written by Francis Scott Key are actually: “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.”

American Idol winner Scotty McCreery appeared at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Wednesday (Oct. 20) to belt out the national anthem and also flubbed the words.

Toward the end of the song, McCreery stumbled over the lyrics, singing what sounded like “No, Jose” rather than “Oh say.”

Deschanel not only got the lyrics right, she stayed in tune. The song is admittedly difficult to sing.
