Lana del Rey makes her first foray into fashion in a big way, grabbing the cover of the March issue of Vogue’s UK edition. England is going wild for the songstress even as she still trying to establish herself at home.

Her album Born to Die was released on iTunes Jan. 27 and as a CD on Jan. 31. The music establishment trashed it. Rolling Stone gave it only two stars out of five, but may live to regret the review.

In England, her album has become the fastest-selling album of 2102. It sold more than 117,000 copies in its first week of release, the UK Official Charts Co. reported. The album has outsold the next five on the chart combined.

In contrast, Amy Winehouse’s debut album, Back to Black, sold just over 70,000 copies and entered the charts at No. 3. Del Rey’s sales guaranteed her album a No. 1 opening in the British Isles.

It took 11 weeks for Amy’s album to hit No. 1, although it went on to sell more than 3.5 million copies in the UK. Whether del Rey’s record posts those numbers remains to be seen. But clearly the UK is enthralled with her.

In the United States, the album is expected to debut at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 pop chart next week, behind Adele’s 21, which has owned the chart since its release in February a year ago.

First week sales of Born to Die are projected to range between 55,000 and 70,000 records, impressive numbers for a debut album that’s been widely panned by critics.

Del Rey stumbled three weeks ago with her widely criticized performance on “Saturday Night Live, but she’s been unfazed by the blow back. She performed on David Letterman last week and sounded angelic.

“SNL” did a hugely hilarious spoof last night (Feb. 4) in which Kristen Wiig played Del Rey and answered her critics. It was widely viewed as supportive of the artist. See it below.

She has just signed with Next Model Management, which reps singers like Ellie Goulding and the UK’s Jessie J.

She flew almost entirely under the music industry’s radar, until she had amassed a huge fan base on YouTube, similar to teen sensation Justin Bieber. Her video for her song “Video Games” has been viewed more than 25 million times.
