Amber Riley hit all the right notes on the Feb. 14 episode of Glee, titled “Heart.” Her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” doubled, if inadvertently, as a moving tribute to the late Whitney Houston.
Houston died suddenly Saturday the day before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. She had performed the hit, written by Dolly Parton, for the movie “The Bodyguard,” and it became one of her signature songs.
Her version appeared on the Bodyguard soundtrack album in 1992. Although Parton originally released the track in 1974 on her album Jolene, Houston’s powerful rendition immortalized it and forever made it hers.
On the show, Mercedes (Riley) is having mixed feelings about Sam (Chord Overstreet). She found the courage to profess her love, but found herself torn between Sam and Shane (LaMarcus Tinker). So she decides to go it alone.
Mercedes sings “I Will Always Love You” in the choir room and does justice to Whitney’s song. She brings tears to everyone’s eyes, and it’s hard not to think about the tragic loss of such a great singer.
