Growing Pains' Kirk Cameron a Royal Pain to Gay Groups (watch!) 1Kirk Cameron, who once starred on 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains,” is feeling some pain himself today (Mar. 3) after homophobic remarks during a CNN interview, touched off a backlash among gay advocacy groups.

Cameron, an evangelical Christian, ran afoul of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation after he called homosexuality “unnatural” and “ultimately destructive” to civilization.

“I think that it’s unnatural,’ Cameron told CNN’s Piers Morgan. “I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

He also took a hard line on gay marriage, something he said was “defined by God… in the garden between Adam and Eve.”

“One man, one woman for life ’til death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don’t think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don’t,” he said.

That prompted an angry response from the gay rights group. “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,’ said Herndon Graddick, a GLAAD spokesman in a statement.

“With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections,” he added.

Cameron is at least true to his words. He married fellow “Growing Pains” star Chelsea Noble a year before the sitcom ended in 1992. They remain married with six children, four of whom are adopted.

His Hollywood career has been on the wane, but he star’s in his own evangelical show called “The Way of the Master.” It airs on the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Sky Angel and other Christian networks.

Kirk starred in a Christian themed feature film “Fireproof,” in 2008 that was a solid hit at the box office. It earned $33 million in North America against a production $500,000. Check out his interview below:
