Kirk Cameron Gay Slur: What's All The Fuss About? 1Kirk Cameron is going through a few growing pains of his own. He ignited a firestorm of criticism after he took a strictly Biblical view of homosexuality during an interview, calling gay marraige “unnatural” and “ultimately destructive” to civilization.

The comments, during an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan, drew an immediate rebuke from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and a broader outcry through social media sites. He finally addressed the controversy on the “Today Show.”

“I was surprised, frankly, that people were surprised by the things that I’ve said,” he told Ann Curry.

“I have been consistent for 15 years as a Christian. I’m a Bible-believing Christian. What I would have thought was more newsworthy is if I had said something that contradicted the word of God, if I had contradicted my faith.”

Curry asked, as some critics charge, whether Cameron was engaging in hate speech.

“Absolutely not,” he replied. Of course not. I love all people and I hate no one. When you take a subject and you reduce it to something like a four-second soundbite and a check mark on a ballot, I think that’s inappropriate and insensitive.”

Curry countered by asking whether his statements could be used to encourage bullying or violence against homosexuals.

“Nobody should mistreat anybody,” he said. “We all have our convictions formed by different things and mine are informed by my faith.

“They’re formed by the word of God, and I found that to be an anchor for me, a compass and a guide for me. When people start bullying one another and calling each other names for those different convictions, then I think you get into problems.”

Cameron is best known for his starring role in the ABC sitcom “Growing Pains” which aired from 1985 to 1992. He played troublesome teen son Mike opposite his psychiatrist dad, played by Alan Thicke and mom Maggie, played by Joanna Kerns.

He became a born-again Christian during the height of the show when he was 17-years-old. He now hosts a Christian religious show on cable and is co-founder with evangelist Ray Comfort of The Way of the Master ministry.
