Lana Del Ray, American Idol, TheImproper.comLana Del Rey has weathered some heavy criticism over her style, but she sang her hit “Video Games” on “American Idol” last night in the same droll, understated way as her “Saturday Night Live” performance.

The judges may not have scored her too highly if she were a contestant.

“Dawg, you gotta’s step it up,” Randy Jackson probably would have said.

“Put some more piss in it,” judge Steven Tyler would have advised her.

“I love it; I just love it,” Jennifer Lopez would have responded teary eyed. (She loves everything)

But Del Rey wasn’t a contestant, and her anti-style style of singing was a departure from the animated showtune brio of the contestants. It’s TV, they’re probably told, look lively.

The performance was taped. Del Ray was in Germany for the Echo Awards, that country’s equivalent of The Grammys.

The 25-year-old singer was dressed demurely in a white-sleeveless midriff baring top and a white skirt. She pulled the mic close to her mouth and sang the track from her debut album Born to Die, with a barely perceptible sway.

Del Rey was pilloried by critics after her SNL performance because she seemed to fall short of the pre-show hype. While she was throaty and restrained, she’s impressed since that.

Her confidence also seems to be growing. Wonder if she picked the same tune she sang on SNL for “American Idol?” Thumbing her nose at critics, maybe?

A more likely choice would have been “Blue Jeans.” She just released a video for the song this week. From a marketing standpoint, it would have been a better choice. But that’s what we mean by anti-style.

Lana, a New York native, released Kill Kill, a three track EP, in 2008 under the name Lizzy Grant, short for Elizabeth Grant.

Born To Die is the first album released under her current stage name, Lana Del Rey.
