Courtney Love, the wife of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was less than thrilled that Beatle Paul McCartney joined the surviving members of the grunge band last night at the 12-12-12 Relief Concert for Hurricane Sandy victims. She probably hoped to fill the spot herself.

It was a mix and match night as artists from Bruce Springsteen to Alicia Keys jammed together at the Madison Square Garden. But McCartney and Nirvana was one of the night’s highlights.

The fact that McCartney was sitting in with the band at all was sheer accident. He dropped in on an earlier jam session without realizing he was playing with Nirvana’s Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and other surviving members.

“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together,’ McCartney recently told London’s Sun newspaper. “I said, “Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?” And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’

The whole idea didn’t sit well with Love, however. She told gossip site TMZ that she might have felt differently if John Lennon were still alive. Although how that figured into the issue is unclear.

Lennon was perhaps more aligned with Cobain’s style of grunge rock, which he pioneered in the 1990s before committing suicide in 1994. Although Paul is more associated with the Beatles’ pop sound, he is probably the most musically talented of the ’60s group.

Love also didn’t like the fact that the performance was called a Nirvana reunion, since Kurt was such a big part of the band, according to the site.

Paul and the band sang a new song “Cut Me Some Slack,” that Grohl and McCartney wrote for the soundtrack of hs new film “Sound City Movie.” Check out the tune below and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for all of the latest music updates.
