Matt Damon’s new role as Liberace’s lover Scott Thorson in the upcoming HBO biopic “Behind the Candelabra,” is raising the gay question again… Long after he thought it was put to rest.

Damon and pal Ben Affleck could have been poster boys for Gay America when their film “Good Will Hunting” came out.

Neither bothered to address the rumors in the 15 years since the film debuted, although their lusty love lives seemed to answer the question for most people. Still, the film includes some racy love scenes with Michael Douglas, who plays Liberace, leading Playboy to pop the gay question, again.

“I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay, as if being gay were some kind of f–king disease,” he told the magazine. “It put me in a weird position in that sense.”

Damon said the political climate for gays has changed dramatically, allowing people like Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper to come out “so beautifully and powerfully,” without fear of repercussions.

“If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John,” he said. “These two men were deeply in love and in a real relationship—a marriage—long before there was gay marriage. That’s not an insignificant thing.”

Damon famously dated Minnie Driver and Winonna Rider before marrying Luciana Bozán Barroso, with whom he has three children. Ben went through all those shenanigans with Jennifer Lopez before he married Jennifer Garner.
