stewart-affleck-focus-frontKristen Stewart won’t get back to work on a film right away as she hoped to following the end of the “Twilight” saga. Her next project has lost its leading man. Ben Affleck has dropped out of the production. Does he regret signing on Kristen?

Stewart, 22, was anxious to sink her teeth in a new project to put behind her both “Twilight” and her sordid summer affair with Snow White Director Rupert Sanders.

In a new interview with Newsweek, she apologized again for the affair, indirectly, of course. “I apologize to everyone for making them so angry,” she said. “It was not my intention.”

“It’s not a terrible thing if you’re either loved or hated,” she added. “I don’t care [about people’s opinions]. It doesn’t keep me from doing my s–––.”

But it seems she won’t be going back to work as soon as she hoped. Affleck is reportedly dropping out over a scheduling conflict.

“While the actor very much wanted to do the film, the timing just couldn’t be worked out,” a source said.

The comedy is about a con man who becomes romantically involved with a younger protege. The situation goes awry when a former flame reappears just as he’s about to pull off an elaborate con in Buenos Aries. It was supposed to start shooting in April.

Affleck was supposed to play Stewart’s love interest. But the age gap is close to Stewart’s and Sanders’. Affleck is 40, while Sanders is 42. Stewart will turn 23 this coming April.

When word leaked that she might star in the film, sleazier tabloids raised red flags, suggesting the two might become involved off-screen, given their reputations.

The film is supposed to involve “passionate” kissing scenes, and a sex scene in bed, which may have been high on the creepy scale, given Stewart’s affair with an older married man.

Affleck, however, is also busy with his latest film “Argo,” a tense thriller based on a true story of a CIA agent who rescues U.S. diplomats during the Iranian hostage crisis. The film is a front runner for Oscar consideration.
