Although critics have long maintained that pageants like Miss Universe and rival Miss American are anachronistic in today’s feminist society, they still have mass appeal.
Pageant organizations have tried to play down the “beauty” aspects by including competitions that focus on talent and knowledge of social and world affairs. The latter has often proved to be a stumbling block for contestants.

In this year’s competition, Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, was tripped up by a question about what new law she might want to enact if she had the power to do so.
“We should have a straight way to go in our similar or in our lives or as is this … I am a surfer and I think the best way I can take is the wave that I wait for it.” Say What?!?!?!?
Her non sequitur response could have been due to translation, or her lack of command over English. But what a body she had. She looked stellar in the swimsuit competition and it may have been enough to elevate her to third place in the competition.
Even the newly crowned Cupo had to overcome a slight stumble during the evening gown competition. But she demonstrated enough poise to sway the judges to overlook the mishap. And, she doesn’t look too bad in a bikini either.
