Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have suddenly become the object of empathy from Kristen’s mother to “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, who’s the latest to take responsibility for their troubles. But how much should Rob and Kristen blame themselves?

Meyer, who is profiled in The Sunday Times of London magazine, said she felt “absolutely” responsible for the crushing media scrutiny that Rob and Kristen have faced during filming of the “Twilight” movies.

“Here’s the thing: there are some actors who are looking to be world famous, to be that household name,” she told the magazine.

“Although they might discover that there are a lot of negative things involved in that, it’s what they want. But that doesn’t apply to Kristen and Rob. That’s what makes it kind of ironic and tragic.”

In another recent interview, Kristen’s mother Jules Stewart said she felt guilty about encouraging Kristen to sign on to the big-budget movie “Snow White and the Huntsman” because that’s where she met Director Rupert Sanders.

Of course, scrutiny for their on-screen work is one thing; Rob and Kristen have drawn the most media attention for their off-screen romance. And, a big part of that is because they would neither confirm nor deny they were in a relationship for most of the time they were dating.

If the decision to remain silent on the relationship was to protect their privacy, it had just the opposite effect. It fueled reams of media speculation. Less scrupulous tabloid websites exploited the situation by publishing blatantly speculative stories just to take advantage of them.

Once the tabloids realized neither Rob nor Kristen would do anything to dispel even the most outrageous stories, it became open season on them. After their relationship became common knowledge, every other week stories appeared about them getting engaged, planning a dream wedding and Kristen’s pregnancy.

Last summer, when Kristen was caught in a secret relationship with Sanders, those story lines went out the window. The tabloids suddenly had a whole new line of speculation to exploit. Would they break up? Would they get back together? Would they stay together?

Contradictory stories have bounced around the Internet like ping pong balls. In just one example, gossipcop accused HollywoodLife of “fabricating an embarrassing web of contradictory stories and blatant sensationalism” about the couple.

HollywoodLife bet on the wrong narrative — Stewart and Pattinson splitting — and is now flip-flopping for the hundredth time,” the site charged. Maybe so, but cynically, it keeps the readers coming back.

Kristen Stewart’s Mom Feels Guilty About Snow White Role

If Meyer and Jules Stewart should feel guilty about anything, it should be for not strongly advising Rob and Kristen to take responsibility for their public image and be more truthful about their relationship. So who’s really to blame?
