Chris Brown making rounds to promote his new album.

Chris Brown has obviously been schooled on marketing. With a new album coming, he went on the “Today Show” this morning and decided to finally man up for assaulting Rihanna. He exhibited a major attitude change, but was he sincere, or just posturing?

Brown, 24, has had a spate of negative publicity over the past few months, from physical altercations with other rappers to reports he’s two-timing his supposed girlfriend.

But somebody must have told him that cads with anger management issues might have trouble selling records. He told Matt Lauer that he’s “been humbled by the whole experience” stemming from his 2009 assault of the Barbadian singer on the eve of The Grammys.

“Knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to, you know, Rihanna and be that man that can be who is a man,” he said trying to explain himself.

To his credit, Lauer didn’t let him off the hook. He asked whether Brown was simply trying to rebuild his image to sell records.

“I think everybody is entitled to their opinion,” he replied. “For me, it’s just a learning process. You know, I have to just take it one day at a time. I can’t make everybody like me… it’s about me being positive,” he said.

The notion that life is a “learning process,” has become a catch-all excuse for celebrity bad behavior lately. Everyone from Miley Cyrus to Justin Bieber and Lindsay Lohan have used it.

While they are under intense pressure as celebrities, they’re not exactly children. How much time in rehab or community service do you need, before the “learning process” ends and being responsible for your behavior kicks in?

Brown’s appearance on “Today” coincides with the release of his latest video for his song “Fine China,” which will appear on his upcoming sixth studio album X. It hits the streets this summer. Check out his interview below and be sure to follow TheImproper on twitter for the latest celebrity news.
