Anne Hathaway, Cast Go Behind the Scenes of Les Misérables (watch!) 1Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman promise in a new video to deliver something never seen before in a production of “Les Misérables,” the classic Victor Hugo tale of love and redemption set against a fevered rebellion in early 19th century France.

The story has been adapted for film no less than 12 times going back to a 1909 production, starring William V. Ranous as Javert and Maurice Costello as Jean Valjean.

Even Orson Welles did a radio adaptation in 1937.

The novel, considered one of the greatest of the 19th century, has also been adapted for stage and is the the longest-running musical in the world after The Fantasticks. The Broadway show is currently on a 25th anniversary tour of the United States.

Needless to say, the expectations are pretty high for the new movie and it’s all-star cast, which also includes Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Samantha Barks as Éponine, Sacha Baron Cohen as Thénardier, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thénardier.

“It’s going to be different for sure,” says Hathaway, who plays struggling factory worker and single mother Fantine. “It’s the first time anyone has ever tried it like this.” Hathaway was featured in a trailer for the movie back in May.

“The idea of singing live is daunting,” says Jackman. “What it gives you is this freedom.”

The power of the movie, says Director Tom Hooper, comes from the actors singing live. Normally, actors record the music beforehand and then act out the scenes while miming to songs.

“By recording it live, Tom is allowing us the normal spontaneity of film acting,” says Redmayne.

The clip gives a nice preview of many of the actors singing their parts. Check out the video below and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for more movie updates.
