President Obama never looked more presidential than when he announced Osama Bin Laden’s death in May, and a television movie about the raid may give his campaign a last-minute lift.
“Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden” will debut on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, Nov 4, just two days before the election.
The president figures into the movie, even though it focuses on the raid itself, according to the trailer. There is no denying the connection between the two.
Obama vowed during the 2008 campaign to capture or kill the Sept. 11, 2001 terror mastermind, something the Bush administration failed to do during eight years in office.
In a nationally televised announcement on May 1, Obama broke the news that the leader of Al Qaeda had been killed by military and CIA agents in a daring raid on his hideout deep in Pakistan. The nation breathed a collective sigh of relief as the president pronounced that “justice has been done.”
The movie, directed by John Stockwell and produced by Harvey Weinstein and Nicolas Chartier, of “The Hurt Locker” fame, will chronicle the operation that led to Bin Laden’s death. A separate feature film by “Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow will debut on Dec. 19.
A big question is what version of events will be featured in the television movie. A team of experts including a recently retired Navy Seal, a top CIA operative and one of the most renowned bin Laden historians reportedly vetted the production for accuracy, according to deadline.com
But the administration’s recounting of events, which changed several times, has been sharply contradicted by an unauthorized book on the raid by a Seal Team Six raider who took part in the mission.
Crucially, the book claims Bin Laden was killed by a single shot to the head 90 seconds into the raid, after he peered out of a doorway as raiders made their way up stairs to his room. He was already dead by the time they entered the room, author Chuck Pfarrer wrote.
The administration’s version of events claims Bin Laden was killed after a 45-minute fire fight.
Whatever the case, the film will put a positive spin on the event that will be a not-so-subtle reminder that Obama got the job done. “Twilight’s” Cam Gigandet will star with Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriquez, Xzibit, Kathleen Robertson, Eddie Kay Thomas and Kenneth Miller, according to reports.
