Is Ryan Reynolds Ready to Play Gay Green Lantern? 1Ryan Reynolds starred as “The Green Lantern” in the 2011 comic book movie with hot Blake Lively as his love interest. In a sequel, he’s more likely to be interested in dating tennis player James Blake (not that he’s gay, or there’s anything wrong with it).

The Green Lantern character, a comic book fixture since the 1940s, will be the first DC Comics superhero to come out of the closet, the comics brand announced today (June 1).

Going forward the character will be gay, much to the consternation of a conservative family group.

The character never quite attained the stature of Superman or Batman in the constellation of superheros. He’s been reinvented at least twice after suffering through a long hiatus from publishing after World War II.

But the new gay Green Lantern will have at least one tie to the past. The character is returning to his original name Alan Scott.

It was first used with he debuted but was dropped when the character was re-invented in 1959. The Lantern became brawny test pilot Hal Jordan. And he had two kids!

In his latest incarnation, he’s a total metro-sexual, an unmarried media mogul, with a Type-A, personality and quite possibly a house on Fire Island.

The move has been under fire ever since it was announced earlier this year. Conservative parents group “One Million Moms” questioned why gays needed a superhero role model.

“Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don’t, but do want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light,” it said in a statement.

But gay-rights group GLADD called the criticism “outlandish,” according to gossip site TMZ.

“From Christian churches to sports fields, to now even fictional comic book worlds, our culture overwhelmingly supports gay and lesbian Americans and that’s what anti-gay groups like this are working against,” it said in a statement.
