Out of 52 entrants, the top five contestants were Nana Meriwether of Maryland, first runner-up, Audrey Bolte of Ohio, second, Jade Kelsall of Nevada, third, and Jasmyn Wilkins of Georgia, fourth.

The pageant had just the slightest spark of controversy over the Miss Universe organization’s decision to let transgendered women enter the competition. Culpo was all for the move.

Celebrity Judge Rob Kardashian asked: “Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?”

“I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women,” said the Boston University student.

“But today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it’s a free country,” Culpo said.

Miss Iowa Rebecca Hodge was named Miss Congeniality, and Miss Oregon Alaina Bergsma was named most photogenic. Neither made it into the round of 16.

The pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Culpo will represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.
