Manning showed off his amazing slimdown on “Good Morning America” June 4, 2012, where he discussed his weight gain (and loss) journey.

Drew, who purposely began bulking up last May, says he was “humbled” by his experience as a fat person and is now better able to understand the mentality of the overweight people he trains.

“The biggest thing [I learned] is that it’s not just about the physical,” Drew, 31, told GMA. “It’s not just about the meal plan and the workouts and those things. The key is the mental and the emotional issues. I realized those issues are real.”

The 6-foot-2 Manning, a self-proclaimed fitness fanatic, transformed from a sleek 193 pounds to an unhealthy 263 pounds, thanks to a sedentary lifestyle and a high-carb, fatty diet. The previously athletic Drew ballooned from a 34-inch waist to a whopping 48 inches, and experienced lethargy, soaring glucose levels and dangerously high blood pressure from his weight-gain experiment.

Manning’s wife, Lynn, says Drew became depressed and lethargic the heavier and less active he became.

“His self-confidence, that completely went away and depleted,” she says. “[He was] becoming lethargic, lazy, not helping around the house.”

Drew agreed he spiraled downhill the heavier he got.

“I was in denial at first until she kept pointing out the things I was doing,” Manning recounted. “But I did become lazier. I had less energy so I did become exhausted and I kept seeing how it affected our relationship because of that. And so that’s where the biggest surprise was, the emotional [part].”

Drew ended his experiment in November 2011 and regained his toned physique by working out again and resuming his old, healthy diet.

“It was hard to get back into the exercise routine,” said Manning. “Before I loved going to the gym, but for the first time in my life, I was humbled…doing push-ups on my knees, doing assisted pull-ups, things like that for the first time, it was a very humbling experience.”

Manning has chronicled his amazing weight journey in his new book, “Fit2Fat2Fit: The Unexpected Lessons from Gaining and Losing 75 lbs on Purpose.”
