Tom Cruise First Divorce Reaction, Defends Scientology 1

Tom Cruise appears to be attempting to get Scientology out of the firing line in one of his first responses to a divorce petition filed by wife Katie Holmes.

His reps were spreading the word to media outlets today (July 5) that the controversial pseudo-religion is not at the center of Holmes’ decision to end their six year marriage.

They claimed that Katie and her team are using the church as a pretext to win public sympathy for her decision to end the marriage. Holmes reported did not want Suri her six-year-old daughter with Cruise to be indoctrinated by Scientology, according to gossip site TMZ.

Holmes was raised a Roman Catholic, but converted to Scientology when she married Cruise in 2006. “She [Katie] was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies,” one of Tom’s reps claimed.

But looks can be deceiving, and opinions can change. What’s more, the threat of Suri undergoing forced church indoctrination could be ruled reasonable grounds to obtained full custody of her.

Whatever the case, the church has taken a huge beating in the media. Katie plans to exit her marriage appear to be as carefully staged as one of Tom’s “Mission Impossible” movies. Why such precautions?

The church has been the subject of much criticism over the years, not only for its secretiveness, but also for the extent of control it exerts over its members.

In one chilling reminder of both its secretiveness and power, Shelly Miscavige, wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige has been missing since 2007. Some believe she’s being held against her will deep inside a Scientology compound, or worse, dead.

Eerily, Shelly is the church member who introduced Cruise to Holmes.

Meanwhile, Katie is doing her best to go about her business and keep life as normal as possible for Suri. She was spotted today at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan.
