Tennis star Maria Sharapova is gearing up to play in the London Olympics, but took some time off the tennis circuit for a stunning fashion shoot in the Russian edition of Harper’s Bazaar.
Sharapova, 25, exploded on the tennis scene in 2004, when she defeated two-time defending champion and top seed Serena Williams in a huge upset to win Wimbledon and her fist Grand Slam singles title. She was all of 17.
She became the world No. 1 women’s tennis player in 2005.
But a year and a half later she suffered a shoulder injury that has plagued her career on court off and on ever since. After surgery on her shoulder she returned to the Top Ten players last year.
She won this year’s French Open and regained her No. 1 ranking. The last time she held it was right before the 2008 French Open. She was the No. 1 seed for the first time at this year’s Wimbledon Championships but lost in the fourth round to Sabine Lisicki.
The willowy 6’2″ tall blonde has always had an eye for fashion. She signed an eight-year $70 million deal with Nike in 2010, the richest endorsement deal with a female athlete. Sharapova launched her own tennis apparel line, the “Nike Maria Sharapova Collection,” in 2010.
