Taylor Swift took to an unusual forum to connect with fans and talk about her upcoming album, tentatively entitled Red and debut a new song. She hosted nearly a 30-minute chat on Google’s new G+ network, and never left home.

She wore a red dress with white stripes and her hair was washboard straight as she sat surrounded by fans, answering their questions.

“I’ve been working on this record so hard for so long,” the country queen said, showing the album cover. “We’re really into details.” Swift was obviously playing off the album’s name, with her red earrings, dress and lipstick.

So one of the most obvious questions was how she arrived at the album’s name. “I wrote a song called ‘Red,’ and thinking about what that means to me and all the different emotions that are written about in this album.

“Crazy, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the past two years. In my mind, all of those emotions are red. … There’s nothing beige about any of those feelings,” she explained.

Swift said she’d written between 30 and 35 songs over the past two year, and has winnowed the list down to 16 tracks for the new album, which may also include a bonus track or two. “It was really hard to get it down to 16,” she said.

Naturally, Swift had love on her mind when she wrote the songs, something she’s done in the past, occasionally to her ex-lover’s regret.

“I tend to kind of skew in the direction of writing songs about love; that’s kind of where I naturally go,” the 22-year-old said, “really dysfunctional and not good generally.

“When I’m writing an album, my world becomes a big storyboard…everyone around me has the potential to be a character.” She’s got that right, just ask John Mayer.

Swift loves to put little messages and clue words in her songs, and this album will be no different. It will have a few zingers, too, no doubt.

To hear Swift’s song, a “really, really romantic song to my lovely ex-boyfriend” wait until the end of her session. “It’s called ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.'” Hmmm… wonder what she means by that? Check out the interview below.
