Rihanna on Oprah: Scary Fragile Like Whitney Houston (video) 1Rihanna praised Chris Brown as a “love of her life,” but drew the line on their current relationship at “friendship,” and acknowledged that the R&B singer is in a relationship with Karrueche Tran. Then, why was the interview so scary?

The revelations where among the highlights of her wide-ranging interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired yesterday (Aug. 19) on Oprah’s OWN Network.

On the most important question, Rihanna reiterated what she has said all along: She is not in a relationship with Brown and the two are just friends. But she hoped the best for him and said she was happy the are rebuilding their friendship “one small step at a time” following his 2009 assault.

While her relationship with Brown was the focus of media speculation, the overriding take-away from the interview was how emotionally fragile Rihanna seemed, evoking another famous pop-singer, the late Whitney Houston.

“I thought she was gonna be kind of a bad ass; kind of a hard-edged, rocker pop woman. Nothing could have been farther from the truth,” said Oprah before the interview.

Rihanna, like Houston, has incredible stage presence, but during the interview, she was emotional, broke down crying more than once and talked about how she was “super-duper afraid of the pedestal that comes with fame.” She also said how lonely she often feels.

“She was very emotional,” Oprah observed following the interview. “She was vulnerable. She pushes the edge.” Rihanna has also exhibited that she is prone to excessive alcohol and drug use.

Houston could have been described the same way. At the peak of her fame, she started a descent into drug and alcohol abuse that ruined her career and ultimately led to her death at 48, also on the eve of the Grammys. She was in an obsessive relationship and marriage to rapper Bobby Brown.

His contribution to her death is hotly disputed, but one thing is obvious, he was powerless, or did nothing, to prevent her from destroying herself.

Despite all the cheer-leading by a cheesy tabloid, Rihanna appeared to have the right perspective on Brown. But if she proves obsessive about the relationship, it could ultimately prove to be unhealthy and possibly self-destructive.

“It’s awkward. I still love him. My stomach drops. I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the other part of me,” she said.

Brown, who still exhibits anger management issues, fled the scene after leaving his then-girlfriend bloodied and unconscious. The assault occurred on the eve of the Grammys where both were scheduled to perform. The two got into an argument after Rihanna allegedly became jealous because Brown was flirting by text with another woman.

He was later arrested and pleaded guilty to felony assault. He was sentenced to five years probation and community service. Check out Oprah’s interview below.
