Angelia Jolie will soon join the ranks of Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts in the role of a lifetime as an evil villain. But with Snow White played out, she’ll take on another fairy tale classic.
The Walt Disney Studios has tapped Jolie to star as Disney’s ultimate villain, according to deadline.com. She’ll play the evil fairy Maleficent from the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty.”
The film will be live action, and Jolie will potentially star with Elle Fanning, who is in talks to play Princess Aurora, aka Sleeping Beauty.
Maleficent is the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil” who is the worst of the worst Disney villains. As the fairy tale goes, she curses Princess Aurora after not being invited to her christening.
The princess is condemned to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday. Instead she falls into a deep sleep.
In the 1959 Disney animated version of story, Maleficent is in the darkest and most intense scenes of all Disney productions. Maleficent transforms into a dragon and Prince Phillip must slay her on his way to rescue Aurora.
But Jolie is hoping to imbue the character with some warm qualities, too.
“It’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman … I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
Robert Stromberg, the production designer of “Avatar” and Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” and “Oz The Great and Powerful,” is directing, according to deadline. Linda Woolverton, whose work includes “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Alice in Wonderland,” wrote the script, and Joe Roth will produce.
The film is set to debut Mar. 14, 2014 domestically.
