Mel Gibson Goes Into Spin Control on Jay Leno (watch!) 1Mel Gibson is in spin-control mode again after another tape-recorded rant went public. He laughed off the tirade, suggested it was justified and never came close to apologizing during a “Tonight Show” appearance.

“Maybe you don’t know this about me, but I’ve got a little bit of a temper,” he told Jay Leno.

Gibson, 56, said writer Joe Eszterhas had failed to produce a script for Jewish war movie “The Maccabees” after “15 months of research, meetings, discussions and the outpouring of my heartfelt vision for this story.”

While Gibson had Eszterhas holed up at his Costa Rica getaway, he let loose with an expletive-laden tirade. It rivaled the infamous 2010 invective he hurled at his then-girlfriend Oksana Gregorieva, who also had a tape recorder handy.

Eszterhas said Gibson blew up in front of his young son, who was terrified by the tirade. The writer fired back with a nine-page manifesto, dropped on a Hollywood gossip Web site, charging Gibson with antisemitism.

“The guy writes a nine-page letter…if he put half as much time and effort and creativity and imagination into a screenplay, which he was supposed to write, as he did into that letter…we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Gibson told Leno.

“It’s kind of like you build a house, you hire a guy to put a roof on it. He comes over and talks about the roof and then you get rained on all night.”

Gibson said Eszterhas received an advance for the script, which was rejected by the studio, Warner Brothers. Gibson said he had a “fiduciary duty” to the studio to see that a script was forthcoming.

“A guy tapes you in your own home…when did it come to the place where you can’t blow off steam in your own home?” the actor said.
