Kate Upton, who has gone from bikini model to international supermodel in two years, was officially crowned a high fashion queen with her first U.S. Vogue magazine cover. The mag is considered the Bible of the fashion industry.
Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is known to be finicky and capable of making or breaking fashion careers, took Upton under her wing last year, after a controversy erupted over the model’s weight.
Upton had just landed her second cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and some critics thought her luscious curves looked sloppy. Wintour swept in and featured the 20-year-old model in a photo spread inside the magazine.
Kate Upton Trades Bikinis for Sexy Sportswear
Gone were the barely there bikinis; instead Kate was swathed in haute couture.
That was a signal Kate was officially in the club. Landing the cover, however, moves her into the top ranks of fashion, even though she’s already appeared in Vogue editions in Spain, Germany and Italy, on top of other fashion magazines like Elle and Cosmpolitan.
Kate appears on the June cover, which was just released. The magazine praises her for down-to-earth sensibility and calls her “the hottest supermodel on Earth.”
The 5’10” tall model, who turns 21 next month, may well be the first supermodel discovered by the Internet. She became a YouTube phenom at 18, thanks to a seemingly innocuous clip.
Upton, who is known for her luscious curves, now sees herself as a brand. “I never set out to be on the runway’, she said. ‘I feel like I trust my career path. I would love to have my own lingerie line”
She’s also dabbled in films.
Kate was a belle of the ball at the annual Fashion Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art over the past weekend. Consider it her coming out party.
