Naomi Watts as Princess Diana. Does she have the look?

Naomi Watts faces a daunting challenge capturing Princess Diana, one of the 20th century’s most intriguing and tragic public figures. A new trailer for the biopic provides the first glimpse of her in the role and the jury is still out.

The clip is a montage of scenes from the movie, but there’s no hint how much it will probe her controversial relationship with Dodi Fayed, the son of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Diana, the first wife of Britain’s Prince Charles and mother to Prince William and Prince Harry, was killed with Fayed in a Paris car accident in 1997. The wreck also took the life of her driver Henri Paul.

She also was believed to have had a torrid love affair with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan.

During the first half of the trailer, Watts isn’t shown. Finally about 31 seconds in, she turns her face to the camera. It’s not convincing. There is no dialogue, although she looks somewhat Diana-esque toward the end of the clip.

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the film focuses on the last two years Diana’s life. Since Watts is British and Australian she should have no problem handling the accent.

It seems like much of the film will focus on her relationship with h Khan and secondarily Fayed. But it could also suggest a love triangle.

Biopics of famous people are always dangerous territory. Lindsay Lohan butchered her depiction of Elizabeth Taylor. Even Meryl Streep was criticized by some for her solid portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, for which she won a best actress Academy Award.

Watts acknowledged the challenges she faced in an interview earlier this year. A big hurdle for Watts is Diana’s look. She was classically beautiful.
