Miley Cyrus reacts to critics of her MTV Music Video Awards performance.

Miley Cyrus’s shocking–shocking!–performance on the MTV Video Music Awards is still burning up the Internet as critics wag their fingers and scold her for her naughtiness with Robin Thicke. What would Hannah Montana say?

But the truth is, she’s no longer Hannah Montana and MTV isn’t the Disney Channel.

Her squeaky clean show ended in 2010, nearly three years ago. And, guess what? Miley has grown up. How much longer does she have to be held accountable to a fan base that no longer exists?

Miley Cyrus Strips, Dirty Dances at MTV VMAs (20 photos!)

Miley has been Internet fodder ever since her risque semi-naked photo spread in Vanity Fair when she was a mere 15. Now that was something to shout about. But the rest has just been noise.

Feigning shock over what Miley wears, what Miley says or what Miley does has become such a cliched response, that should be the scandal. Of course, it should be expected from cheesy tabloids that will do anything to attract readers.

Miley Cyrus Sings ‘We Can’t Stop,’ MTV ‘Bleeps’ Her! (watch!)

UsWeekly ran the typical odious “Exclusive” under the headline “Miley Cyrus’ Team “Freaking Out,” Robin Thicke “Bummed” After VMAs.” Yet neither was true. In fact, the story even contradicted itself, with quotes knocking the claims down.

Didn’t anyone get the humor and self-parody in her act? It was priceless.

You would think by now independent bloggers would know better. But most are 25-year-olds who think Miley is doing something new. In fact, MTV has a long history of promoting edgy performances on the VMAs.

Miley Cyrus Raps on New Song, Blows Off Critics (Listen!)

A decade ago, Madonna generated the same hand-wringing when she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during her performance on the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Hello, bisexual chic. Now, it’s cool for girls to kiss girls.

Or how about Howard Stern baring his butt cheeks waaay back in 1992 when most of today’s shocked bloggers were probably in elementary school. Ok, still not cool.

Or, Diana Ross feeling up Lil’ Kim in 1999. My God, that happened in the 20th Century!

A particularly galling bit of hypocrisy came from Thicke’s mother Gloria Loring.

Miley Cyrus Debuts ‘We Can’t Stop’ Director’s Cut Video (Watch!)

“I just keep thinking of her mother and father watching this,” she told a website. “I was not expecting her to be putting her butt that close to my son. The problem is, now I can never ‘unsee’ it.”

What??? Has she seen her son’s unrated video with three prancing nude models and their bouncing boobs? Now that’s something she should “unsee.”

Sure Miley was once a Disney teen queen, but so was Britney Spears. Remember her provocative MTV VMA snake dance in 2001?

And so was Aguilera, you know… “xtina,” her fourth studio album, Stripped, her nude and semi-nude Rolling Stone covers?

If Miley, wasn’t Miley, she’d be Hillary Duff, or worse, Marie Osmond. Then what would the critics say?

Miley who? That’s what.
