Michael Douglas says reports that his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones is over are overblown.

Michael Douglas refuted reports that his recent “time off” from wife Catherine Zeta-Jones was a prelude to a divorce. He told reporters in Germany today (Sept. 2) that they are “fine” and implied no permanent split is imminent.

The news threw more than one tabloid for a spine. Most reports claimed the marriage was all but over.

The split, so the story went, was symptomatic of long-simmering problems in the marriage exacerbated by Douglas’s recent bout with cancer, Zeta-Jones continuing problems with a bi-polar disorder and differences over Douglas’s incarcerated son, Cameron.

The latest round of speculation was sparked when Douglas was spotted cruising the Mediterranean in a luxury yacht while Catherine was home in New York City with the couple’s two children.

He seemed surprised during a news conference in Berlin when the subject came up, although he seemed to be aware of the reports and blamed the press for all the drama.

“I have a crisis at home? No, I think the press has a crisis,” he said. “We are fine. My wife and I are fine,” Douglas said.

“We take a temporary separation, but the press… it gives you stuff to write about,” he added.

Douglas suffered through a dysfunctional, 23-year marriage to first wife Diandra Luker, whom he divorced in 2000. He set a record (since broken), when he shelled out $45 million and gave up his Santa Barbara estate to end the marriage.

He married Zeta-Jones weeks later after a brief courtship. They have two children together.

Douglas, now 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, continue to work as hard as ever, leaving little time for their relationship. So, spending time apart is nothing new. So far neither is known to have lawyered up for any potential legal proceedings.
