Miley Cyrus warms up for the performance that would lead to the destruction of America.
To kick the show off, SNL vaulted into the future to 2045, a post-apocalyptic world with “Papa Joe” (Kenan Thompson) reminiscing about the end of America.
“Well, most folks say it was the government shutdown; others blame ObamaCare. But I remember the exact day America ended; it was the 2013 MTV Video Music awards. I remember it like it was yesterday,” he says.
The scene cuts to Cyrus wearing her ridiculous teddy bear body suit and wagging her tongue, warming up for her performance.
“Yeah, that’s when all the troubles began,” he adds.
While Miley loosens up, a ghostly apparition appears; it’s old Miley! Vanessa Bayer reprises her role as the long-haired Hannah Montana version of Miley. She’s there to warn her about her performance.
“This is so weird, I must be hallucinating,” says a bewildered new Miley. “I must have smoked too much… cigarettes.”
The skit, which ran just shy of five minutes (a tad too long) included drop-ins by Will Smith (Jay Pharoah) and Taran Killam, who was hilarious as Robin Thicke.
But Bobby Monyihan provided a hilarious touch as one of Miley’s back-up dancers in a pink teddy bear suit.
