Britney Spears: Does she or doesn’t she support gay marriage?

Britney Spears, who has a huge following in the gay community, has been noticeably quiet on the issue of gay marriage, prompting speculation that her silence is tantamount to opposing same-sex marriage. If so, it could be a huge career setback.

The question is important because the campaign to extend gay marriage across the country is gaining momentum everywhere but the south.

The Bible-belt Southern states, where Britney grew, up are solidly opposed to revising marriage laws to include gays. Britney could be a powerful advocate for gay marriage because she also has a large following of Southern fans.

A slew of celebrities, from Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lopez, “Glee’s” Lea Michele, Lena Dunham, Ben Affleck and Olivia Wilde to name a few, have been outspoken about it.

But more recently, she let slip in a Twitter Q&A that one of her favorite authors is Max Lucado, a preacher at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas.

His messages are generally positive and upbeat, until it comes to homosexuality. Then he turns to fire and brimstone. He claims gay marriage will lead to polygamy and other “deviations,” including “legalized incest.” He also calls it a step back “to the place from which God led us.”

“Britney grew up singing in the church and attends the local Baptist church when she’s home in Louisiana,” the source told The Enquirer. And, the Baptist church preaches against gay marriage.
