Beyonce goes from the erotic to the bucolic in videos for her new self-titled album.
She held off releasing the videos, however, and only provided 30-second teasers ranging from sexy, high-powered visuals to soft idyllic scenes from Rio de Janiero.
The videos are also a montage of her life and include husband Jay Z, daughter Blue Ivy, mom Tina and her old Destiny’s Child band mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. They reunited for a performance at the Super Bowl in February.
Frank Ocean, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Drake and Jay-Z an even Blue Ivy are featured on various songs.
She calls the package a “visual album” and released the videos with the music exclusively on iTunes.
In all, the album contains 14 tracks and three bonus videos. Surprisingly, previously leaked tracks, “Grown Woman” and “Standing in the Sun” did not make the album. But a video featuring “Grown Woman” is included.
The release was accompanied by a statement from the 32-year-old singer explaining her decision to break music industry custom with the release of the album.
“That the album is available on the day the world is learning about its release is an unprecedented strategic move by the artist to deliver music and visual content directly to her fans when she wants to and how she wants to, with no filter,” it said.
“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” Beyonce says. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans.
‘There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans.”
The album, however, was perfectly timed for the holiday season, and fans will get to check out the music before critics can have their say about it.
