Tessanne Chin won Season 5 of ‘The Voice.’ She has an extensive professional background.

Tessanne Chin could do for Jamaica what Rihanna has done for Barbados. That is, put the East Caribbean island on the map after Chin won Season 5 of the “The Voice.” She was the favorite most of the way, why are we not surprised?

Chin was impressive throughout for her poise, stage presence and professionalism. After all, she’s a seasoned professional.

She has opened for famous acts such as Patti Labelle, Peabo Bryson and Gladys Knight. She also toured for three years with Jimmy Cliff, according to her biography.

What’s the point of a show like this if they pit professionals against mostly amateurs? The coaches repeatedly emphasized how good this year’s talent was. With ringers like Chin, how could it be anything less?

It just seems to defeat the purpose of these shows when they have seasoned professionals as contestants. Oh well.. it’s television.

Chin, 28, fended off strong challenges from Will Champlin and Jacquie Lee. They finished third and second respectively.

It was also a welcome win for coach Adam Levine, breaking a three-season streak by judge Blake Shelton. Then again, it’s not like he was working with raw talent. Adam also coached Champlin while Christina Aguilera mentored Lee, a 16-year-old from New Jersey.

Chin showed her versatility singing with a complement of departed contestants–James Wolpert, Preston Pohl, Olivia Henken and Grey–on Sam and Dave’s classic “Hold On, I’m Coming and dueting with powerhouse Celine Dion, her idol.

She proved she could hang with Dion on the Canadian songstress’s hit “Love Can Move Mountains.”
