Who Will Win Golden Globes Without Harvey Weinstein Twisting Arms?

The Golden Globes arguably have been the most susceptible to political pressure over the years, but without Harvey Weinstein twisting arms behind the scenes, this year’s awards may be the most influence free in recent memory. But that doesn’t mean politics won’t be playing a part. Overshadowing this year’s ceremony will be the #MeToo movement, which led to Weinstein’s downfall....

Oscars Have Become Like the Golden Globes, Meaningless, Self-Destructive

The Oscars are doing their best to become The Golden Globes, another meaningless award to Hollywood egoism and self-importance. Nothing says it more than this year’s flap–for the second year in a row–over the lack of minorities among Oscar nominees. Talk about self-entitlement. But first, let’s start with the Golden Globes. They’re doled out every year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a sketchy group with a long, tainted history....

Has Hollywood Foreign Press Finally Cleaned Up Its Golden Globes Act?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, (HFPA) which sponsors the Golden Globes, has long been known for its sketchy awards process, even though the national obsession with celebrity news coverage has lifted it out of the shadows. But has it really changed its act? The problem begins with the composition of the association itself....

Golden Globes vs. Screen Actors Guild Awards: How Do They Compare?

The Golden Globes are the ugly step-sister of Hollywood’s season of self-congratulation, largely because of the sketchiness of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. So how did their nominations stack up against the more prestigious Screen Actors Guild? A good starting point is the Best Actor category. The SAG nominated Steve Carell (“Foxcatcher”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Jake Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler”), Michael Keaton (“Birdman”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) The HFPA, which nominates separately for drama and comedy films, added David Oyelowo (“Selma”) to its list for drama and match the SAG on all of its other nominations, except for Keaton....

Elle Fanning Sexy Dress Blows Away HFPA Event, And She’s 16! (Photos!)

Elle Fanning, the 16-year-old sister of actress Dakota Fanning, looked like she was skipping her teenybopper phase and leaping right into adulthood at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association dinner last night (Aug. 14). She was ultra sexy in red. Fanning wore a structured red Vivienne Westwood strapless gown that probably would her kicked out of her High School prom. But she looked liked she belonged among the Hollywood sirens who attended the event. She even made bombshell Sofia Vergara look drab in her more conservative red dress. ...

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were totally the moment as hosts of the Golden Globe Awards. They treated the night with just the right touch of irreverence, humor and not a few biting comments, including a little riff on former host Ricky Gervais. “Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight because he is no longer technically in show business,” Fey, 42, quipped....

Golden Globes a Perfect Storm of Hollywood Money, Power, Greed

The Golden Globes are completely meaningless from “a scandal-riddled organization aired by a production company desperate for money on a network praying for ratings,” charges Hollywood’s ultimate insider, Nikki Finke. But the real crime is why Hollywood turns a blind eye to its shenanigans year after year. Yet, come Jan. 13 when the curtain rises on the two-hour NBC special, A-list celebrities, studio moguls, media bigwigs and Hollywood players will all be there. Stars will graciously accept awards, thank their hosts dearly and give heart-felt acceptance speeches. And that may be the real scandal. ...

Golden Globes 2013 Commendable, Condemnable, Just Plain Weird

Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence were among the expected nominees for 2013 Golden Globes, but Jack Black? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association once again raised a perennial question: What were they thinking? The choice of nominees is both commendable and condemnable for those who made the list as well as for those who were left off. The Globes are supposed to be a harbinger of the all-important Oscars, but this year’s selections were clearly tilted to off-beat indie films at the expense of big-budget blockbusters like “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Skyfall,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”...
