Sony Pictures is bouncing back from the hack with strong digital sales of “The Interview,” the controversial North Korean assassination spoof that allegedly triggered one of the most devastating corporate cyber attacks in Internet history. The company reported today (Jan. 20) that the film has grossed more than $40 million from digital downloading. In contrast, the film earned $6 million from its limited theatrical release. Sony’s Call to Yank ‘The Interview’ From Theaters Irks Public, Poll Says

Sony’s decision to pull it’s North Korean comedy movie “The Interview” from theaters in the face of threats from unknown hackers was a mistake according to nearly half of the people who responded to a new poll by Reuters News Agency. The UK-based news service and Ipsos polled 1,246 Americans online released today (Dec. 22) and found that 47 percent disagreed with Sony’s decision to back down. But 29 percent of those polled said it was the right thing to do in the face of threats of violence against movie theaters that showed the film by a shadowy hackers group that calls itself “Guardians of Peace.”...

North Korea had a direct hand in the hacking attack that flooded the internet with thousands of Sony Pictures documents and led to terrorist threats against movie theaters scheduled to show the Kim Jong-Un comedy “The Interview,” according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI released a statement this morning (Dec. 19) that said “North Korea’s actions were intended to inflict significant harm on a U.S. business and suppress the right of American citizens to express themselves.” It continued:”Such acts of intimidation fall outside the bounds of acceptable state behavior.”...

‘Interview’ Pulled by First Theater Chain to Buckle Under Terror Threat

“Interview,” the Seth Rogen, James Franco comedy about the assassination of North Korean beloved leader Kim Jong-Un won’t be screened in more than 278 theaters after the first chain buckled in the face of an alleged terror attack. Carmike Cinemas, which operates 2,917 screens in 41 states, mostly in the south, said it is passing on the Sony film, according Deadline. The move is unprecedented in the annals of film-making but the Georgia-based chain said it decided to make the move after receiving assurances from Sony that it would support theaters that pull the film.
