Mexico’s Flourishing 18th Century Art

“The Elevation of the Cross” by Antonio de Torres, cousin of the brothers Juan and Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez. Torres was a prolific and highly original artist who disseminated numerous works to north-central Mexico. Torres created this monumental painting as part of his Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) series for the Franciscan convent of San Luis Potosí. The artist’s interest in formal experimentation is evident in his foregrounding of the action and in the highly theatrical construction of the pictorial narrative.
