7. The myth of Gen. George Patton: Patton glamorized the Sherman M4 in World War II. He was a brilliant tactician and strategist, but his campaigns took a have toll on his tank corps. When Patton’s 3rd Division landed in Europe it had 241 Shermans. During its campaign, 648 Sherman tanks (counting replacements) were destroyed in combat and 700 were knocked out of action. The loss rate was 580 percent, according to Cooper. He personally blocked the introduction of a heavier tank because he favored the speed and maneuverability of the Sherman.
