American Idol runner up Adam Lambert is openly gay but women find him gorgeous and not just because of his sweet voice. He’s been declared a new American sex symbol, and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a major fashion and pop icon.
His androgynous looks can change with the moment as he proved during his Idol performances. He went from eye-liner Goth with his jet black hair streaming across his face to a 50s Elvis look and easily pulled off both.
If he hadn’t before, he established his fashion cred in a new photo spread in the upcoming issue of Details magazine. And women love him!
While he was touring with fellow American Idols, girls in the audience started tossing bras and panties on the stage while he performed. It made for an odd mix, since many of his gay fans were tossing riding crops, feather boas and handcuffs as well.
“I think it’s weird that I’m having this effect on women. It’s flattering. I’ve never had underwear thrown at me before. Clearly there’s something significant about it, because there aren’t a lot of openly gay men in the entertainment industry,” he says.
So how is it that “a gay man with an unabashed affection for eyeliner and nail polish can emerge as a new American sex symbol?” the magazine asks. Lambert has his own ideas.
“When I’m onstage,” he says, “there’s definitely a sexual energy that goes into it.” Moral Majority types found his style gyrations on stage scandalous, but Lambert offers no apologies.
“I have no problem telling people, ‘You know what? I’m not your babysitter, and I’m not your church,'” he says. “They go, ‘Jesus loves you, too.’ One time I just blurted out, ‘I’m Jewish, okay? I don’t need another crucifix! This is not an appropriate gift for me!'”
Lambert’s ability to hit the high notes has been compared to Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and to the soaring vocals of his hero, ‘80s glam rocker Freddie Mercury, who was also gay and died of AIDS.
As for the women, he finds them mildly amusing and is grateful for their ardent support. “Yeah, I am gay, but I like kissing women sometimes,” he says. “Women are pretty. It doesn’t mean I’m necessarily sleeping with them.”
No, it doesn’t, but one look at his photo spread tells why so many women would like to.
