Rooney Mara rocks an androgynous look for Calvin Klein

Rooney Mara, who comes from a privileged background, probably has never set foot in a New York City subway, but she’s the epitome of downtown hipster cool riding the express train in a new commercial by Calvin Klein.

Mara, 28, scored a breakthrough on the big screen as Lisbeth Salander in the 2011 mystery thriller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

She underwent an extreme makeover to play the dark, brooding, Goth-looking Swedish computer hacker, who teams up with a journalist played by Daniel Craig to uncover a decades old murder involving a wealthy Swedish industrialist.

The role, originally played by Noomi Rapace, delves into the dark underworld of Swedish corporatism and neo-Nazism. The good news is she’s slated to reprise the role in a sequel “The Girl who Played with Fire,” part of a crime novel trilogy by the late Stieg Larsson.

Rooney rocks some of the same vibe in the opening of the CK video. She wears a motorcycle jacket and closely cropped hair with a distinctly androgynous vibe. She’s filmed roaming the New York City streets, scoring some ‘Bucks and jumping on the Six Train.

Calvin Klein didn’t cut corners on the clip. It hired Hollywood Directer David Fincher to helm the film. He’s known for a noir film style and such hits as 2008’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” with Brad Pitt and 2010 film “The Social Network.” He also directed Mara in “Dragon Tattoo.”

The theme of the commercial, which by they way promotes a new frangrance, “Downtown,” is supposed to show the day in the life of a “young, contemporary woman.” But Mara looks like a trust-fund baby all the way, shifting into some high-end evening wear and hopping into a limo later in the clip.

“Downtown Calvin Klein is a fragrance for women that live by their own rules,” Catherine Walsh, a Senior Vice President, American Fragrances, Coty Prestige, said in a statement.

Gee, last time we were downtown the streets reeked of piss, beer and stale cigarettes, but maybe this is about some other part of downtown, like the Financial District. In any event check out the intriguing video below, and follow TheImproper on Twitter for the latest fashion updates.
