Bar Refaeli Busted for Israeli Taxes; Many Supermodels Face Same Dilemma

Bar Refaeli has never denied her Israeli citizenship, except, apparently, when it comes to paying taxes. The international model was arrested today (Dec. 17) and charged by Israeli authorities with evading millions of dollars in taxes on income, luxury properties and high-end cars.

Rafaeli faces a dilemma that confront international models, who earn income all over the world.

They face myriad tax laws that vary from country to country. Complying with them can be a daunting task.

Central to the Israeli charges is whether the Jewish state is Refaeli’s country of residence. Israeli citizens who do not reside in the country are exempt from reporting income earned outside the country for tax purposes.

But authorities claim the model is a resident, according to NBC News.

Ironically, Rafaeli visited to Germany in 2012 to be honored by the German edition of GQ magazine. She affirmed her Israeli roots by tweeting on Holocaust Memorial Day in April,

“Honoring those who were lost. Respecting those who survived. Always remember and never forget!” she wrote.

Refaeli’s mother Tzipora Refaeli was also detained. She’s accused of acting as a straw registrant for lavish apartments in Tel Aviv actually rented by her daughter. Bar often stays there, authorities claim.

Her lawyers say the case involves a long-running dispute over her country of residency. Refaeli, like many models, spends much of her time in New York City.

“Every matter will be checked and studied and there is no drama,” Tzipora’s lawyer, Giora Adereth, told local media.

“This a civil matter in every way that will be dealt with between civil lawyers and the tax authorities. Soon everything will be clear. There is no drama and no problem,” she added.

Both were released on bail but ordered not to leave Israel without permission from the court for 180 days. She must also post a $65,000 bond before leaving the country.

Refaeli married Israeli billionaire Adi Ezra in September. She previously dated actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
