Edie Campbell is the thinking man’s Cara Delevingne. The British model is a muse of famed fashion photographer Mario Testino and has spent most of her career modeling in Europe. Along with her arresting beauty, she’s a braniac and a champion horsewoman.
She was discovered in 2006 by British Vogue editor Lucinda Chambers.
Testino personally picked the five-foot, ten-inch tall model for a Vogue feature about up-and-coming Londoners. He then paired her with fashion icon Kate Moss for Burberry, launching her fashion career.
Her big breakout year came in 2013. She covered both the April issues of British Vogue and Vogue Italia. The following month, she was back on Vogue Italia’s cover alongside fellow British model Karen Elson.
She was one of four covers of LOVE magazine’s Autumn/Winter 2013 issue and made an appearance on German Vogue’s cover as well. She capped off her incredible run by being named “Model of the Year” at the British Fashion Awards [BFA] in London.
When she broke into the business, she was constantly compared with tragic 60s Warhol ‘It Girl’ Edie Sedgwick . (Right, they had the same first name.) But Campbell said the comparisons ended there.
She’s totally her own person. Needless to say, she also inherited her parents’ brains.
Her father is a hedge fund manager and her mother is an architect. Campbell attended St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London and graduated from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London with a First Class Honours degree in History of Art, according to a 2010 Vogue interview.
Campbell isn’t afraid to take on the industry. She spoke out about the lack of privacy for models backstage during fashion shows. They’re often forced to change clothes and get naked in front of front of hair & make-up artists, photographers, caterers, A/V technicians, press, security guards, and “literally hundreds of other people.”
When she’s not modeling she’s following her passion for horsemanship. She once said she got into modeling to help pay for the upkeep of her horses. So, let’s lift a round for equines.
Check out her photos and let us know your thoughts. She posed for a sizzling summer shoot in the mag’s June/July issue.
