New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Heidi Klum open Fashion Week.

Heidi Klum was among the guests of honor along with Janet Jackson and Kenneth Cole at the amfAR gala to support AIDs research, a signature event that kicks off New York Fashion Week. A slew of celebrities attended, including Lindsay Lohan.

Klum, 39, looked stunning even though she’s coming off a rough year that included a divorce from her husband, the British singer Seal.

Lohan also has had her troubles this year. She’s fighting a possible jail sentence for allegedly lying to police officers about crashing her Porsche. Her hoped for movie comeback in Lifetime movie “Liz & Dick” was also widely panned.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked off the black-tie gala with a ribbon cutting ceremony, while the 50-foot, 10-inch tall Klum towered over him.

Klum wore a stunning backless Michael Kors dress, with Christian Louboutin shoes and bag.

The organization, known formally as the American Foundation for AIDS Research, draws wide support in the fashion industry and Hollywood. Both were well represented at its biggest fundraiser.

Models Anne Vyalitsyna, Lily Donaldson, Doutzen Kroes, Karlie Kloss and Chrissy Teigen were spotted in the crowed. Teigen was escorted by boyfriend John Legend.

Lohan was among the most conspicuous at the event with flaming red hair, a silver and gold gown and a white fur jacket. Sarah Jessica Parker, Katharine McPhee and Cee Lo Green were also spotted mingling at Cipriani Wall Street.

The amFAR gala has signaled the opening of Fashion Week since 1998.

Over that time it’s honored President Bill Clinton, Clive Davis, Richard Gere, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Hanks, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, Quincy Jones, Donna Karan, Liza Minnelli, Rosie O’Donnell, Natasha Richardson, Carine Roitfeld, Julian Schnabel, Sharon Stone, Dame Eli and Roberto Cavalli for their work on behalf of AIDs research.
