Kenneth Cole’s return to New York Fashion Week after a seven-year hiatus was one of the highlights of the opening of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City. Fall-Winter 2013 designs are the focus of the show.

Heidi Klum, Cuba Gooding Jr., Brooke Shields, Mario Cantone and Rachel Dratch were among the celebrities in the audience at Chelsea Muse in downtown Manhattan.

The location was no suprise; Cole, with creative director Kobi Halperin, went for a hip, urban downtown look with black, gray, olive drab and burgundy the predominant colors.

Leather and metallics were also dominant themes, adding a futuristic twist to the designs. Aggressive styling was also the order of the day with extreme layering,” according to WWD.

“Outerwear pieces, including voluminous wool coats, sharply cut topcoats with contrasting leather sleeves, hooded parkas and cropped puffers were the standouts,” the fashion bible noted.

Perhaps because of his long absence, Cole wanted to send a clear message that the latest trends in social media and social networking hadn’t passed him by. His show included a high-tech opening with a video and snappy slogan: “Yield to Social Netwalking.”

For a finale, models turned their handheld devices on the audience, and had fun snapping photos and tweeting to friends.
