The film fouses on an epic battle between the human race and giant Godzilla-like sea monsters.
To even the playing field, humans construct huge robot-fighting machines controlled by two people whose thoughts are interlocked though Tron-like computer technology. That enables them to operate the robot in a syncronized fashion.
Godzilla was a reptilian sea monster with a dinosaur’s size and strength. The made-in-Japan horror flick attributed the monster’s growth to radiation after-effects from atomic bomb explosions. The monster emerged from the sea to wreak havoc on civilization.
Likewise del Toro’s creatures also emerge from the sea, the idea being that our destruction won’t come from space aliens but from something deep within the earth. Judging by the trailer, they monsters, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes, are unleashed by an under-sea fissure.
The giant monsters are called “Kaiju” in a tip to past Japanese genre films. To combat this new threat, massive robots, known as Jaegers, are built.
Industrial Light and Magic is handling the visual effects, which are the real stars of the film. Oscar winners John Knoll and Hal T. Hickel are overseeing the work. They’re known for their special effects on the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.
