Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer stride into the action in ‘The Lone Ranger.’

Johnny Depp looks like he could fly with that dead crow on his head in a new trailer for his upcoming Disney movie “The Lone Ranger.” As it is, he does a fair amount of soaring as the masked man’s sidekick Tonto.

The movie, helmed by “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski, is counting on its association with the Disney blockbuster to give it some box office momentum when it hits theaters in July.

“The Lone Ranger” also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.

But Depp, more than anyone, has a huge personal stake in the film. He championed it, when Disney had all but written it off as dead. Whether he can work his Pirates magic in a western remains to be seen.

The movie has the same gritty feel as the “Pirates” franchise and Depp has created another one-of-a-kind character in Tonto. The Native American gets equal billing with the Lone Ranger, unlike previous efforts. Tonto also mirrors in many ways his “Pirates” character Capt. Jack Sparrow.

The new trailer gives a closer look at some of the action sequences and special effects that Disney is known for. Would you believe masked man John Reid, a given-up-for-dead Texas Ranger, rides his horse through a moving train?

The trailer is punctuated with Tonto’s witticisms and ironic moments as the unlikely duo exact revenge on the bad guys in a fight against greed and corruption.
