Michael Shannon plays Superman nemesis General Zod in a new trailer for Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill’s Superman has something else to wring his hands about beside his own self-absorbed identity crisis. Would you believe the destruction of earth? Get off your can Superman and save us from the evil General Zod, who makes a bow in the film’s latest trailer.

Superman no longer needs to feel so alone. General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, is also from his home planet and possesses similar superpowers in the glow of the earth’s yellow sun.

“You are not alone,” General Zod’s voice booms as the clip opens. That must be, at least, somewhat reassuring. Previous trailers have focused on Superman’s struggle with an identity crisis. Now, he has someone to relate to. But not in a good way.

Zod is determined to destroy the earth if Superman doesn’t give himself up. They way he talks, Superman is made out to be some kind of fugitive.

“I have journeyed across an ocean of stars to reach you,” the general continues. “Your world has sheltered one of my citizens. He will look like you, but he is not one of you.

“To those of you who know his location, the fate of the planet rests in your hands. To Kal-El (Superman’s name on home planet Kryton) I say this: Surrender within 24 hours or watch this world suffer the consequences.”

Superman arrived on earth as an infant in a tiny capsule, but Zod arrives will all kinds of major hardware.

The film also stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner.
