Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the film focuses on a little-known chapter in her life, starting two years before her death in an untimely auto accident.
Although Diana was dating Dodi Fayed, son of Harrod’s Department store owner, Mohamed Al-Fayed at the time of her death, the true love of her life following her divorce from Prince Charles was reportedly Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan.
Diana’s butler Paul Burrell, said the Princess ended the two-year relationship in June 1997. But Khan said he ended their relationship because he did not want to live under the same scrutiny she faced from the media, according to book about him.
In turn, some believe Diana began dating Fayed to make Khan jealous. Diana, Fayed and their driver Henri Paul were killed in a horrific traffic accident in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997. Khan, who is now 54, believed the car crash was an accident.
The movie is being overshadowed somewhat by the casting of British-Australian actress Watts as Diana. The two-time Oscar nominee is 44, while Diana was only 36 when she died. Critics say the age difference is noticeable.
Watts and Diana also have markedly different facial features and bone structure. Diana was a towering five-feet, ten-inches tall, while Watts is a petite five-feet, five inches tall. Plus the resemblance is sketchy at best.
